2015-2016 Study Abroad Statistics

Preliminary data shows that 1,171 University of Iowa students--813 undergraduates and 358 graduate and professional students--studied abroad in 70 different countries during 2015-16. More complete statistics will be reported here when available.

2014-2015 Study Abroad Statistics

1,220 University of Iowa students—909 undergraduates and 311 graduate and professional students—studied abroad in 72 different countries during 2014-15.

For undergraduates that graduated in 2014-15, 14% participated in a study abroad experience at some point in their college career at UI.

Academic Status

Among the UI undergraduates, 2% were first-year students, 12% sophomores, 43% juniors, and 43% seniors.

Field of Study

Undergraduates who studied abroad during 2014-15 had majors in all of the Colleges; 50.1% of students represented the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, 18.7% were in the Tippie College of Business, 17.8% in University College, 6.7% in the College of Education, 5.5% in the College of Engineering, and 1% in the College of Nursing.

Destinations

UI undergraduates studied abroad in 54 different countries during 2014-15 and UI graduate students studied in 57 different countries. Combining undergraduate and graduate student destinations, 72 countries in total were visited.

The highest concentration of undergraduates—61%—was in Europe. 23% studied in Asia, 6% in Latin America, 4% in Oceania (Australia & New Zealand), and 6% in all other regions combined. The breakdown for graduate students was 29% in Asia, 23% in Europe, 29% in Latin America, 6% in the Middle East, 5% in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 7% of students studied in multiple countries.

Combining all undergraduate and graduate students who studied abroad in 2014-15, the destination breakdown by world region is as follows: Europe – 49%, Asia – 25%, Latin American & the Caribbean – 13%, Australia and New Zealand – 3%, Other regions – 9%.

Three students who have displayed exemplary acts of kindness in their communities and achieved outstanding academic success were awarded scholarships to St. Mary’s University in Canada.

The students received the scholarships from Henley & Partners, the global leader in citizenship and residence planning, in conjunction with the Halo Foundation.

Cuthbert Forbes Jr., public relations officer of the Halo Foundation said on OBSERVER AM yesterday that the recipients were selected based on acts of kindness as well as intelligence.

“A lot of times we overlook our youth who do kind things. So, for the scholarships, we look at their humanitarian efforts and their grades of course, because at the end of the day, it’s schooling, “said Forbes. “It’s these small acts of kindness that we look at; like have you have been helping your neighbour’s child with homework for five years and it’s just something that is flying under the radar that no one knows about.”

According to Franklyn Southwell, the main scholarship winner, this initiative will help to motivate other students to get more involved in their communities.

“It shows that there is a system that awards individuals who not just excel academically, but are hardworking and provide a lot of their services to charitable causes. This acts as an incentive for more young people to get involved in the community as their service will not go in vain,” said Southwell.

Southwell’s outstanding humanitarianism captured the foundation’s attention after he took up residence with his grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. The former St. Joseph’s Academy student also helps homeless people he meets at supermarkets giving them food and money and as well as assisting other charity groups.

Southwell will have his tuition, accommodation, meals, books, and other direct university costs covered, while the two other recipients, Armani Gomes and Raynier Debellotte, will have only their tuitions covered. This is the first year that the foundation has awarded scholarships to three students.

Davidson students embrace education abroad in all forms – to conduct research, perform service, or complete an internship. Approximately three quarters of the student body study, travel, work, or perform service in another country.
STUDY ABROAD
Study abroad is an invaluable opportunity that supplements the Davidson undergraduate experience. Students have the opportunity to choose from more than 10 Davidson faculty led programs and from over 100 academic programs that are operated by third-party providers around the world. Last year, well over half of our graduating class studied abroad for a year, semester, or summer.
TRAVEL GRANTS
Travel grants provide one of Davidson's most effective internationalization tools. During the last academic year, the program awarded grants to 96 students totaling $228,250. Most of these grants go to students who design their own research projects abroad. Projects included archaeological digs in Mexico and field biology and rainforest ecology research in Australia. These kinds of projects give students the opportunity to develop the kind of independence and creativity that are hallmarks of a liberal arts education.

• Merit-based: These awards are based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities, and often factor in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record. The most common merit-based scholarships, awarded by either private organizations or directly by a student's intended college, recognize academic achievement or high scores on standardized tests. Most such merit-based scholarships are paid directly by the institution the student attends, rather than issued directly to the student.^[3]
• Need-based: Some private need-based awards are confusingly called scholarships, and require the results of a FAFSA (the family's EFC). However, scholarships are often merit-based, while grants tend to be need-based.^[4]
• Student-specific: These are scholarships for which applicants must initially qualify based upon gender, race, religion, family, and medical history, or many other student-specific factors. Each year since 1985, Kappa Gamma Pi has awarded one or more Cornaro Scholarships for Graduate Studies. Because eligibility is limited to Kappa Gamma Pi members, all of whom are honors graduates, the quality of the recipients is exceptional. The Cornaro Scholarship is competitive and is based on a number of criteria, specifically how the recipient’s life reflects the Kappa Gamma Pi motto of Faith and Service. Recipients of the Cornaro Scholarship encompass the values of volunteer work, leadership experience, high academic standards and solid career aspirations. The scholarship program is supported by donations made by Kappa members and friends.

The Cornaro Scholarship derives its name from Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, the first woman in the world to receive a university degree of any kind. Elena Cornaro, a member of a noble Venetian family, received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1678 from the University of Padua, Italy. 3. NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program — $7,500

NCAA student athletes interested in attending a Master’s program can be nominated for the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program during the academic year in which they complete their final season of eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Students should have excelled both academically and athletically during their undergraduate career, and must intend to continue their academic work at an accredited graduate or professional school. The application deadline is continuous, and prospective students should check the website for further details.

4. National Women’s Studies Association Graduate Scholarship — $1,000

The National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) awards an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a female student involved in the research or writing stages of a Master’s thesis in the interdisciplinary field of women’s studies. The proposed research project must be about women and should support the NWSA’s mission statement. Scholarship applicants are encouraged to educate themselves on and join the NWSA before applying. The annual application deadline is May 15.

1. Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Research Grant — $5,000

The Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Research Grant is awarded to graduate students interested in conducting research identifying attitudinal and behavioral contributors to African-American academic success. Successful applicants will be U.S. citizens attending a university or four-year college, and will present a research proposal that makes it clear their research focus is on high academic achievers. The application deadline is June 15.

2. Cornaro Scholarship — $5,000

The Cornaro Scholarship is a competitive award offered to honors graduates associated with the Kappa Gamma Pi sorority (affiliated with over 100 colleges and universities in the United States). The scholarship is based on a number of criteria, but successful applicants will effectively demonstrate how her life reflects the Kappa Gamma Pi motto of “Faith and Service.” Other considerations include the applicant’s values, volunteer work, leadership experience, high academic standards, and solid career aspirations. An online application and a letter of acceptance to an accredited graduate program are required. The application deadline varies year by year, so check the website for further details

Austria

Free for who: EU, EEA and Swiss students.

Admin fees: None.

Terms: Austrian students, EU students, and students with equal status at universities do not have to pay fees, provided they complete their course on time. If you exceed the minimum study duration by more than a year, you’ll have to pay €363.36 per additional semester.

International students outside of the above categories pay €726.72 per semester. So an average Masters would cost around €1525 – 3050. Courses undertaken at University Colleges of Teacher Education are cheaper at €363.36 per semester.

An elaborate Victorian manor house with over 100 rooms in the picturesque English countryside is second home to University of Evansville students and faculty desiring to study abroad. Harlaxton College, the British campus of the University of Evansville is located just one hour north of London and for lovers of English history and culture, this program will not disappoint. Students spend a semester studying an interdisciplinary introduction to British life and culture, including literature, art history, economics, history, and political science. Each course contains a combination of lectures, seminars, and travel.

A medieval 12th century castle in the Italian Alps provides the backdrop for Guilford College’s Brunnenburg Semester. Students combine study and work while overlooking the town of Merano, near the Austrian border, and in easy reach of Munich, Vienna, Verona, and Venice. Fourteen students are chosen for the Brunnenburg Semester and reside in the castle “croft.” Regular excursions by foot into the South Tyrol region are a rich and integral part of the program, as well as more extended outings to major European cities, landmarks, and historic sites.
