We strongly recommend that students and family members only consider private alternative loans after all types of federal and Dartmouth financing have been exhausted. Please meet with a Dartmouth financial aid officer to discuss options that are in your best interest.

ABOUT TAKING ON PRIVATE LOANS

Your ability to obtain private funding is largely based on your credit-worthiness and current indebtedness. Students will be required to use a cosigner.
Scrutinize loan terms (interest rates, fees, payment obligations, etc.), as they vary widely. Most alternative loans do not offer deferment or forbearance options, so if you experience problems during repayment, contact your lender immediately.
