Undergraduate Scholarships for Study Abroad
Scholarship support  is the most tangible expression of the UI’s commitment to increasing the number of students who study/conduct research abroad.  Study Abroad expects to disburse more than $500,000 in scholarships/grants this year.

There are a variety of different scholarships and need-based grants are available to students studying abroad for a semester/academic year and for students studying abroad during the summer/winter sessions (or other short periods of time). We encourage you to apply for any awards for which you are eligible!  Additionally, there are diversity and other UI scholarships, and several, significant external awards that support study abroad.
The University of Iowa is committed to increasing the number of undergraduate students who study/conduct research abroad. UI students are encouraged to step through doors opened by the University to the larger world, to experience other cultures directly.

There are a number of Study Abroad scholarships available to students planning to participate in a semester-length or academic year program. Each of these scholarship web pages appears in the navigation menu, under the Semester or Academic Year heading. There are different categories of awards including financial need-based grants, merit scholarships (based on various criteria), Diversity Ambassador scholarships, and program specific awards. Each of the pages in this category will provide the pertinent information necessary to determine if you are an eligible candidate for that award. It is important to review all the criteria listed before beginning your application packet (including, but not limited to):
  • Overview of each award
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Selection process
  • Application procedure
  • Submission deadline
Applicants for scholarships should review all requirements necessary prior to submission of applications, including eligibility, required components, deadlines, etc. Any incomplete applications or attempted submissions after the published deadlines will not be accepted.
All applicants will receive an email notification of award status (either, "congratulations" and award amount, or "not awarded" if no scholarship will be awarded. This process will occur for all scholarships awarded via Study Abroad in UI International Programs. These notifications will be sent via email (to applicant's "uiowa.edu" email address) following the published deadline. Please allow up to ten (10) business days for email notification. Awards listed as Other UI Awards or External Awards are not administered by Study Abroad in UI International Programs, so any notification will be provided by entities awarding the scholarship(s)
