Tuition fees in the UK have now reached £9,250 a year and students also face some of the highest living costs in the world. 

Fortunately there are a number of countries where universities offer degree programmes entirely in English, along with the chance to learn the local language while you live there.

Zoe Dawson-Williams of foreign exchange firm Moneycorp said: “Britain is currently home to the highest tuition fees and the highest cost of living for students in Europe. As a result, cheaper overseas alternatives are gaining traction as viable options.”

Here are the main points you need to be aware of and some examples of how much it might cost to study for your degree abroad.

Three students who have displayed exemplary acts of kindness in their communities and achieved outstanding academic success were awarded scholarships to St. Mary’s University in Canada.

The students received the scholarships from Henley & Partners, the global leader in citizenship and residence planning, in conjunction with the Halo Foundation.

Cuthbert Forbes Jr., public relations officer of the Halo Foundation said on OBSERVER AM yesterday that the recipients were selected based on acts of kindness as well as intelligence.

“A lot of times we overlook our youth who do kind things. So, for the scholarships, we look at their humanitarian efforts and their grades of course, because at the end of the day, it’s schooling, “said Forbes. “It’s these small acts of kindness that we look at; like have you have been helping your neighbour’s child with homework for five years and it’s just something that is flying under the radar that no one knows about.”

According to Franklyn Southwell, the main scholarship winner, this initiative will help to motivate other students to get more involved in their communities.

“It shows that there is a system that awards individuals who not just excel academically, but are hardworking and provide a lot of their services to charitable causes. This acts as an incentive for more young people to get involved in the community as their service will not go in vain,” said Southwell.

Southwell’s outstanding humanitarianism captured the foundation’s attention after he took up residence with his grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. The former St. Joseph’s Academy student also helps homeless people he meets at supermarkets giving them food and money and as well as assisting other charity groups.

Southwell will have his tuition, accommodation, meals, books, and other direct university costs covered, while the two other recipients, Armani Gomes and Raynier Debellotte, will have only their tuitions covered. This is the first year that the foundation has awarded scholarships to three students.

Last year, well over half of our graduating class studied abroad for a year, semester, or summer.
TRAVEL GRANTS
Travel grants provide one of Davidson's most effective internationalization tools. During the last academic year, the program awarded grants to 96 students totaling $228,250. Most of these grants go to students who design their own research projects abroad. Projects included archaeological digs in Mexico and field biology and rainforest ecology research in Australia. These kinds of projects give students the opportunity to develop the kind of independence and creativity that are hallmarks of a liberal arts education.

Each year since 1985, Kappa Gamma Pi has awarded one or more Cornaro Scholarships for Graduate Studies. Because eligibility is limited to Kappa Gamma Pi members, all of whom are honors graduates, the quality of the recipients is exceptional. 3. NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program — $7,500

NCAA student athletes interested in attending a Master’s program can be nominated for the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program during the academic year in which they complete their final season of eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Students should have excelled both academically and athletically during their undergraduate career, and must intend to continue their academic work at an accredited graduate or professional school. The application deadline is continuous, and prospective students should check the website for further details.

4. National Women’s Studies Association Graduate Scholarship — $1,000

The National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) awards an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a female student involved in the research or writing stages of a Master’s thesis in the interdisciplinary field of women’s studies. The proposed research project must be about women and should support the NWSA’s mission statement. Scholarship applicants are encouraged to educate themselves on and join the NWSA before applying. The annual application deadline is May 15.

The Lydia Donaldson Tutt-Jones Memorial Research Grant is awarded to graduate students interested in conducting research identifying attitudinal and behavioral contributors to African-American academic success. Terms: Austrian students, EU students, and students with equal status at universities do not have to pay fees, provided they complete their course on time. If you exceed the minimum study duration by more than a year, you’ll have to pay €363.36 per additional semester.

1. Choose a university Choosing a university
So, you’ve decided on Germany as your study abroad destination – now it’s time to choose the right course and university for you. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has a database of almost 17,000 programs available to search from, including 88 programs in English. Unfortunately opportunities to study in Germany in English at undergraduate level are currently quite limited, though there are some courses taught in both English and German (typically starting with English for the first two to four semesters and then changing to German). This allows you to study in English while improving your proficiency in German, particularly as your university may offer German language classes.

You may also like to consider the latest rankings of the top universities in Germany while making your decision, or check the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject to find the top German institutions in your field. When choosing a university and a course you should also make sure the course content suits you. Check the information provided on the official websites of universities you’re considering, and get in touch to request more detail if needed.

You should also consider the location. Are you interested in living in cool capital Berlin, immersed in the traditional Bavarian culture of Munich, amidst the skyscrapers of financial hub Frankfurt, or in a quieter student city such as Göttingen?

2. Check the admission requirements Admissions test
Before applying, check that your current qualifications are recognized by your chosen university. To study in Germany you need to have a recognized Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB), meaning ‘higher education entrance qualification’. This can come in many formats, particularly for international students who have gained their school-leaving qualifications in a different country.

Admission to Medical Study in Germany
Admission to medical universities in Germany is competitive and restrictive. Medical education Germany is free and the main admission requirements are high school diploma and Germany language skills. Only Master in medical studies are available in English language.
There are admission restrictions for degree courses in medicine at all universities in Germany. When selecting applicants the universities can take into account not only the average mark of the qualifications entitling the applicant to go to university but also other criteria, for example grades in certain subjects, the results of an interview, a vocational qualification gained before applying to university, the student’s preferred university etc. What is also important is the waiting period for a university place. 
University applicants from a member state of the European Union (EU), from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway or foreign nationals and stateless persons who have gained German qualifications entitling them to go to university (so-called “Bildungsinländer”) are treated as equal to German applicants and, like them, always have to apply via the Internet portal of the Foundation for Higher Education Admission (Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung).
All other international applicants for university places who fulfil the basic requirements for starting a degree course at a German university apply directly to their preferred university, which will also inform them about admission requirements for the degree course. Depending on the university, up to five percent of the university places are reserved for this group of applicants.

Undergraduate Scholarships for Study Abroad
Scholarship support  is the most tangible expression of the UI’s commitment to increasing the number of students who study/conduct research abroad.  Study Abroad expects to disburse more than $500,000 in scholarships/grants this year.

There are a variety of different scholarships and need-based grants are available to students studying abroad for a semester/academic year and for students studying abroad during the summer/winter sessions (or other short periods of time). We encourage you to apply for any awards for which you are eligible!  Additionally, there are diversity and other UI scholarships, and several, significant external awards that support study abroad.

The University of Iowa is committed to increasing the number of undergraduate students who study/conduct research abroad. UI students are encouraged to step through doors opened by the University to the larger world, to experience other cultures directly.

In fact, the first recorded mention of the city was in an official document by Henry III as ‘Nourenberc’ (rocky mountain).

Over the centuries that followed, it grew in size and influence to become an important site for trade in Europe.

More recently, from the Nuremberg Trials to the Nuremberg Rallies – the city played an significant role in World War II.

Famous for carnival, dancing and football, Brazil is also a top destination for students wanting to spend as little money as possible on their studies. Public universities, which are more prestigious and offer a higher quality of teaching than their private counterparts, offer free tuition to international students and only charge a small registration fee at the beginning of the course.

In order to secure a place, students need to take a test, competing against thousands of Brazilian students. Knowledge of Portuguese is another requirement, which can be demonstrated by completing the CELPE-Bras – the only certificate for Portuguese that is recognised in Brazil.

If you do manage to be accepted, you are eligible for the same funding options available to Brazilian students.

Whether you want to explore the hip corners of Berlin or study in a quaint town in the German countryside, you’ll find a place that suits your needs. The country’s higher education system has a strong reputation and, most importantly, tuition is FREE of charge.

All you have to pay is a fee of around €100 (£75) to €250 (£185) per semester, which covers administrational costs as well as the work of the student union.

Certain distinctions and differences can become sources of cultural shock and cultural misunderstandings that can lead a student to inhibit adaptation and adjustment. For example, A key requirement in many foreign institutions is participation. Failure to participate in the classroom with faculty can be a serious obstacle to academic success and if it is coupled with the view that professors are to be held in awe, then the problem can be reflected in the grades given for class participation. Lack of participation can be interpreted by faculty as failure to learn the course content or disinterest in the topic.

Some of the identified distinctions are:

Semester system has three models, they are (1) the semester system comprising two terms, one in fall and one in winter/spring (summer term is not required); (2) the trimester system comprising three terms that includes summer (one of these terms can be a term of vacation); and (3) the quarter system comprising the four terms of fall, winter, spring, and summer, and in which the student can choose one of them to take as a vacation.

Merit-based scholarships from the Office of Admissions do not stack. If a student meets the minimum requirements for multiple awards, they will automatically be awarded the scholarship with the highest dollar value. Receiving a merit scholarship may not disqualify students from also receiving need-based grants or loans offered through the UI Office of Student Financial Aid, depending upon the amount of demonstrated financial need. Study Abroad Financial Advising

The annual scholarships of the National Security Education Program provides fundings to undergraduate students from the U.S. to study less popularly studied, minority world languages. Promoting linguistic and cultural immersion, this award program aims to support students focusing on language studies that are critical to U.S. national security. Boren Scholars can choose to study abroad  in their country of choice, excluding nations within Western Europe as well as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In exchange for funding, scholars must commit to working in the federal government for at least a year after graduation.
